Check out my new garage

I'm standing in the space that should be where a car is parked. But look behind me, check out the staircase.

That staircase takes up a good chunk of parking space. When my husband and I went under contract, we were buying a 4 bedroom, 4 bath home with a 2-car garage, and you would think we’d be able to park two vehicles in the garage, right? The week after we closed, we tried to park our cars and they didn’t fit. We were bummed!

I share this with you today because most builders are going to give you the measurements for your garage but they're not going to include the stairs that could impede your ability to park in your garage. I live in a neighborhood where most people can't even park one car in their garage because the stairs take up a big chunk of vehicle real estate. So, if you're looking to build your home and you want to have a standard two-car garage so that you can park two vehicles, make sure you ask the questions: Where are the stairs going to go and how much usable garage space will I have for my vehicles?
