What is Nashville BBQ?!

When I first moved to Nashville in 2017, I found myself asking that very question. Exploring the city’s culinary scene, I embarked on a quest to uncover whether Nashville had its own distinctive BBQ style or if it simply adhered to the standard Memphis approach. What I discovered was a delightful revelation – Nashville boasts its own unique BBQ tradition!

For many, Nashville BBQ is synonymous with pork or chicken that’s dry-rubbed and smoked over hickory wood. But don’t let that fool you – adding your own sauce is always an option! However, the key distinction lies in when the sauce is applied: it’s not basted or sauced until it reaches your plate. Each BBQ joint in Nashville proudly showcases its own interpretation of the flavor profile, whether it leans towards sweetness, spiciness, or something entirely different – all crafted from scratch.

Completing the experience are the scratch-made sides, rounding out the meal to perfection. Nashville and Memphis may forever debate over who reigns supreme in the BBQ realm, but let’s be honest – the real winners are our taste buds!
